Star Trek Online's Unparalleled Update Will Let You Change Your Captain's Species and Gender

If you’ve been wanting to try out a new species in Star Trek Online but aren’t too keen on creating a new character again, the sci-fi MMORPG’s next

Star Trek Online players will soon be able to swap out their character’s species and gender without having to create a new toon thanks to a new item being introduced in the sci-fi MMORPG’s next major update. Slated to go live on May 28th, Unparalleled will introduce the Captain Alteration Token which will allow players to make these changes while keeping all of their character progress.

The tokens will be sold in the cash shop for 750 ZEN apiece or as a three-piece bundle for 1500 ZEN. Both options will be available at a 20% discount for the first two weeks after they’re released. Players who regularly change their character’s species and gender may want to stock up on these during that time.

Do note that the tokens can only be used once players have completed the tutorial and that the available species will be restricted to the character’s chosen faction and any other species that have been unlocked. “You cannot use this token to make a Vulcan Dominion Captain, for example,” Cryptic says. “This also applies to Discovery and TOS Captains – you’ll only be able to switch to the options available at character creation. For those two faction choices specifically, we may be able to open it to the full 2409 Federation options in the future, stay tuned.”

There’s also a chance that saved costumes might not be compatible with the chosen species. “When you apply the token and change your character, the system will do its absolute best to carry over all of your saved costumes,” the studio explains. “However, there are certain costumes that are not available on all characters, and there may be errors. If the system can’t find a good way copy a costume, it will return to the default outfit.”

Finally, Cryptic also reminds players that swapping gender or species will be permanent and that another token will be required if players decide to change their minds once the process has been completed.
