sport news Fenerbache will vote on withdrawing from Turkish Super League TODAY after rival ... trends now

Apr 02, 2024 at 05:42 pm

Fenerbache will hold an extraordinary vote on whether the club should withdraw from the Turkish Super League today after no action was taken against Trabzonspor fans who attacked their players last month.

Shocking scenes during the club's 3-2 away win saw home supporters invade the pitch and confront Fenerbache stars - with Michy Batshuayi and Bright Osayi-Samuel forced to defend themselves.

Thugs who entered the field of play brandished weapons and even picked up corner flags to attack the visiting team while they were celebrating their victory.

Even at half-time, missiles had rained from the stands, with goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic left bleeding after being struck by a coin. Edin Dzeko and Dusan Tadic were also hit.

President Ali Koc staunchly defended his club after the disgraceful scenes, with no punishment coming for Trabzonspor or their fans.

Disgraceful scenes in Turkey saw Trabzonspor supporters charge onto the pitch brandishing weapons as Fenerbache stars feared for their lives

'The treatment Fenerbahce receives is not something we can tolerate,' said president Koc.

If the vote passes, they would forfeit the remainder of this campaign before starting afresh in the second tier - and hand their sworn enemies Galatasaray the title.

Fenerbache have had grievances with the Turkish Super League for years following a spate of incidents. In the 2005/06 season, a game against Denizlispor, a game was disrupted by missiles from the stands and which cost them the title. No corruption or plans to spurn Fenerbahce were uncovered.

In 2011, the club was mired by allegations of corruption as part of the Turkish match-fixing scandal.

The club's former president Aziz Yildirim was jailed for six years but was declared innocent in 2020.

Some supporters even used corner flags as makeshift weapons in ugly scenes after Fenerbache had won 3-2

The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) banned them from competing in the Champions League the next season and they were later banned from Europe for an extra two campaigns - but they were acquitted of all charges in 2015.

In 2015, more than 40 lives could have been lost when their team bus was peppered with bullets after a 5-1 win over Rizespor, which left the driver 'gushing with blood' and needing to be rushed to hospital.
