South Carolina women's basketball will defend its back-to-back SEC titles

South Carolina women's basketball will defend its back-to-back SEC titles

In a week, South Carolina women's basketball will take the floor at the SEC Women's Basketball Tournament looking to defend its back-to-back conference titles.

But with just two games left in the regular season, Dawn Staley and the Gamecocks (13-1) find themselves in a holding pattern with No. 1 Texas (13-1) for what seed they will be in the tournament.

It's a holding pattern that might not be answered until after Sunday with a coin toss tiebreaker from SEC commissioner Greg Sankey — which Staley didn't appear to be too fond of when discussing it with reporters on Wednesday.

"If we take care of business and Texas takes care of business, our fate is in a coin toss. Yay," Staley said Wednesday.

She added: "I think we should've thought a little bit more ahead of this situation knowing that we were bringing a Texas and a Oklahoma into the SEC. That's just me, though."

As previously reported by The Greenville News' Lulu Kesin, if the Gamecocks and Longhorns go a combined 4-0 this week, both programs will be crowned co-SEC regular season champions and a coin flip by Sankey will decide who is the No. 1 seed in next week's conference tournament.

Here are the three tiebreakers that were used to get to the tie breaker, per the SEC:

Since South Carolina and Texas split the regular-season series 1-1, with each team winning at their home arena, scenarios A and B are eliminated from the tiebreaker scenario. But in true Staley joking form, there is another scenario to determine the regular season title.

"It will be a coin toss if all goes the way I'm seeing it. Texas is probably not seeing it that way, they probably want us to drop a game. I hope they drop a game too. Take it out of the commissioner's hands. It is what it is," Staley said.

The Gamecocks have won the SEC regular season title each of the last three seasons and four in the last five years under Staley, with the outlier being the 2020-2021 season.

South Carolina closes out the regular season at Ole Miss on Thursday at 9 p.m. ET and at home vs. No. 14 Kentucky on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET at Colonial Life Arena.
