Solid-State Batteries To Achieve EV Dominance

Oct 10, 2024 at 01:03 am

While lithium-ion batteries have become the dominant solution for EV battery systems, they suffer from a few limitations. One of these is still not-so-great energy density, and another one is a safety issue linked to the growth of dendrites piercing the battery and the electrolyte sometimes catching fire.

Solid-State Batteries To Achieve EV Dominance

Solid-state batteries are expected to become a key technology for electric vehicles (EVs) in the coming years, promising to offer higher energy density, faster charging times, and improved safety compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries.

Several companies are working on developing and commercializing solid-state batteries, including QuantumScape (QS +0.46%). Here's a closer look at the company's technology, recent developments, and potential in the EV battery market.

QuantumScape Batteries

QuantumScape's solid-state batteries use a unique lithium metal, anode-free design. Anode-free batteries store lithium ions in an electrochemical deposit of alkali metal directly on the current collector, rather than using a separate graphite anode.

This design enables higher cell voltage, lower cell cost, and increased energy density compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries.

QuantumScape's batteries are also designed to be safer, with a solid ceramic electrolyte that eliminates the risk of dendrite formation and potential battery fires.

Solid State Companies

While QuantumScape is a prominent player in the solid-state battery space, it's important to note that other companies are also pursuing this technology.

Here are a few notable examples:

Solid Power (SLDP +0.09%) is another U.S.-based company developing sulfide solid-state batteries for EVs. Its batteries aim to achieve high energy density, long cycle life, and low cost.

Toyota Motor (TM +0.08%) has been heavily involved in solid-state battery research and plans to introduce them in its EVs by 2027. The automaker is working with several partners, including Hino Motors, on developing and mass-producing solid-state batteries.

Hyundai Motor (HYMLF -1.13%) is also pursuing solid-state batteries through its partnership with Factorial Energy. The companies aim to develop and produce high-energy density solid-state batteries for Hyundai's EVs.

Overall, the solid-state battery market is still in its early stages, with several companies competing to commercialize the technology. As EVs become more mainstream and the demand for advanced batteries increases, we can expect to see further developments and innovations in this space.
