Solana Developers Unleash Mainnet Beta Update to Curb Network Congestion Woes
Apr 15, 2024 at 05:16 pm
Solana developers have released a mainnet beta update, v1.17.31, to address the ongoing network congestion on the Solana blockchain. This patch includes enhancements to improve network congestion and issues with the open interest jump, such as showing staked vs. non-staked packets sent down/throttled, using smallvec to aggregate chunks in Quic, implementing a BankingStage Forwarding Filter, and tightening the minimal streams per 100ms for staked nodes.
Solana Developers Unleash Mainnet Beta Update to Tackle Network Congestion Woes
In a bid to quell the persistent network congestion that has plagued the Solana blockchain, developers have released a crucial mainnet beta update, v1.17.31. This timely intervention, deployed on April 12th, has undergone rigorous testing over the past three days and is now highly recommended for widespread adoption by mainnet beta validators.
This patch introduces a suite of enhancements specifically engineered to alleviate network congestion. These improvements pave the way for further optimizations in the forthcoming v1.18 update. The current version effectively addresses network congestion and resolves issues related to open interest surges.
A Deep Dive into Key Upgrades
The update boasts a host of significant upgrades, each contributing to the network's enhanced performance:
- Staked vs. Non-Staked Packet Handling: The update distinguishes between staked and non-staked packets, implementing tailored throttling mechanisms to optimize network resources.
- Quic Optimization: Employing the "smallvec" technique, Quic aggregates chunks, resulting in a substantial reduction in memory allocation overhead for each packet.
- BankingStage Forwarding Filter: This filter enforces stricter limits on the minimum number of streams per 100 milliseconds for staked nodes, ensuring efficient resource allocation.
- Low Staked Treatment: Nodes with exceptionally low stakes are now classified as unstaked within the streamer quality-of-service (QoS) framework, further optimizing resource utilization.
- Default Staked Client in LocalCluster: The update defaults to using the staked client in the LocalCluster environment, streamlining testing and development for validators.
Validators Urged to Upgrade Responsibly
Solana developer Anza has advised validators to implement the latest patch only when the delinquent stake on the network falls below 5%. Delinquent stakes refer to inactive validators, and this percentage represents the total stake associated with offline validators. Therefore, validators are strongly encouraged to install the updates only when less than 5% of the validator stakes are inactive on the network.
Solana's Journey to Network Stability
Amidst a surge in network activity and a frenzy surrounding memecoins, the Solana network encountered severe congestion issues for almost a week, with transaction failure rates reaching an alarming 75%. While developers worked tirelessly on a solution, a co-founder of Solana downplayed the congestion as a mere bug rather than a fundamental network flaw.
The Solana Foundation attributed the congestion to a confluence of factors, including an unprecedented demand for Solana block space and a delay in implementing patches to address network-related issues.
Solana Foundation strategy lead Austin Federa shared that developers worked around the clock to resolve the issue, but the network demand outpaced their efforts. Federa emphasized that engineers had sacrificed sleep to prepare patches and thoroughly test features before deploying them on the mainnet.
Undeterred, Solana developers have meticulously crafted a series of patches to tackle the ongoing problem, with the first released for developers on April 15th.
