Sleep Token's Vessel reveals his favourite 90s album is Fantastic Planet by Failure

Oct 01, 2024 at 04:37 pm

Vessel never gives interviews – apart from that one time he did. In 2017, Metal Hammer sat down with Sleep Token's masked, anonymous frontman for what would become the only conversation he ever had with music press.

Sleep Token's Vessel reveals his favourite 90s album is Fantastic Planet by Failure

Sleep Token frontman Vessel has revealed that his favourite 90s album is Fantastic Planet by Failure.

The masked frontman was interviewed by Metal Hammer for the magazine's 90s Issue, which featured the likes of Limp Bizkit, Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana, Sepultura and Metallica on the cover.

Asked what his favourite 90s album is, Vessel replied: “My favourite 90s album is Fantastic Planet by Failure. It’s devastatingly bleak in a way that resonates into our deepest self.”

Failure are an alt-rock band from Los Angeles, who formed in 1990. Their debut album, Comfort, was produced by Steve Albini and released in 1992.

The band's follow-up album, Magnified, was released in 1994 and helped Failure to secure a major record deal with Warner. They also toured with Tool extensively during this period.

Despite critical acclaim, Failure's mainstream appeal remained limited. Fantastic Planet was released by Warner in August 1996 and only reached number 23 on the US Alt Rock chart.

The album features 14 songs and three segues, blending the grunge sound of Nirvana with ambitious space rock. Failure disbanded a year after the release of Fantastic Planet, leaving the album as a hidden gem of 90s angst.

Failure reunited in 2014 and have since released three albums, although none have quite matched the emotional impact and grit of Fantastic Planet.

Sleep Token released their first music two years after Failure's initial break-up and have quickly become one of the most talked-about bands in the world.

The band will embark on a European headline tour in November and December, including two nights at London's O2 Arena. See the full itinerary below.
