Rare 1p coin from pre-decimal era could fetch more than £160 if it's in good condition

A rare 1p coin from the pre-decimal era could fetch more than £160 if it's in good condition, a TikTok user has revealed. The coin in question is an 1894 penny, notable for being the last of its kind to showcase Queen Victoria's iconic hairstyle.

That design lends it the nickname "bun coin". In the pre-decimal system of currency consisting of pounds, shillings, and pence and employed until February 1971, this coin stood out due to its Helmed Britannia depiction on one side, accompanied by the phrase "one penny" and the date.

Speaking on the matter, he disclosed: "The 1894 penny in extra-fine condition easily sells for over £160, so keep an eye out for this very old penny." The collector also signalled that hunting for it among leftover change might not yield results given the coin's age.

Meanwhile, a more accessible valuable coin could be the Kew Gardens 50p - a desirable addition to any collection released in 2009 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Kew Gardens' opening, reports the Mirror. The coin features the gardens' renowned Chinese Pagoda being encircled by a leafy climber. The rarity of this particular 50p stems from there being only 210,000 in circulation.

A recent eBay listing showed a Kew Gardens 50p coin selling for £147, with an additional £2.70 for delivery, on June 10 after receiving 19 bids. According to Coin Hunter, a change checking website, the average price of a circulated Kew Gardens 50p is around £140, although some have fetched higher prices.

In our search of recent eBay listings, we discovered one such coin sold for £206 in April this year. If you happen to find a Kew Gardens 50p in your change, it's worth checking the date.

The Royal Mint reissued a batch of these coins in 2019 as part of a collection celebrating 50 years of the 50p, and these tend not to command as high a price on eBay.
