PS5 Dominates Xbox in 2023, Outselling Series X and S by a Whopping 3:1 Margin

Apr 19, 2024 at 12:54 am

Sony's PlayStation 5 outsold Microsoft's Xbox Series X and S in 2023, selling a whopping three PS5s for every Xbox. For reasons such as this, many have agreed that the PS5 has won this generation's console war. However, Sony hasn't rested on its laurels. Much like the PS4 before it, Sony is apparently planning to release a PS5 Pro model, based on a slew of leaks and rumors that have emerged over recent months. Leaked reports suggest the PS5 Pro will pack a more powerful GPU, support "enhanced" versions of games, and could potentially launch later this year. We've rounded up all the news, leaks, and rumors about the upcoming console.

Sony's PlayStation 5 Pro: Rumors, Leaks, and Release Date Predictions

Despite its dominance in the market, Sony has not rested on its laurels. Following the release of the PS4 Pro a few years ago, rumors and leaks have emerged suggesting that Sony is planning to launch a new upgraded console, the PS5 Pro.

What is the PS5 Pro?

The PS5 Pro is anticipated to be a more powerful version of the current PS5 console. While Sony has yet to officially confirm its existence, reputable industry sources have reported on leaked specifications and details about the upcoming device.

Analysts speculate that the PS5 Pro will feature a more robust graphics processing unit (GPU), enabling "enhanced" versions of games and potentially supporting resolutions up to 8K. It is also rumored to release later this year.

When Will the PS5 Pro Be Released?

Leaked documents obtained by the YouTube channel Moore's Law is Dead suggest a "holiday" 2024 release for the PS5 Pro. This timeframe has been corroborated by industry insider Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming.

However, it is important to note that this is a tentative date and could be subject to change, especially considering the reported shortage of first-party games scheduled for release on the PS5 this year. Sony's first-party studios have reportedly been testing the PS5 Pro development kit since September, with third-party studios gaining access in January.

How Much Will the PS5 Pro Cost?

The pricing of the PS5 Pro remains a matter of speculation, but historical data can provide some clues. The previous PS4 Pro was priced at $100 more than the standard PS4. Applying this logic, the PS5 Pro could potentially be priced at $550, given that the PS5 Slim was released at $450. Alternatively, Sony could adjust its pricing strategy and lower the price of the Slim to match the Pro at $500.

How Powerful Will the PS5 Pro Be?

If the leaks are accurate, the PS5 Pro will offer a significant performance boost over the regular PS5. The Pro version is rumored to be approximately 45% faster than the standard PS5, with double the rendering power.

It is also expected to feature a significantly faster graphics card, with The Verge suggesting that it could be up to three times faster than the standard PS5. This would enable the PS5 Pro to deliver up to four times the ray-tracing performance, producing stunningly realistic lighting effects, as reported by Insider Gaming.

The PS5 Pro aims to provide a consistent 60 frames per second (fps) gaming experience at 4K resolution, with a "performance mode" allowing games to run at 8K. Beyond the hardware upgrades, the console is reportedly set to utilize a new upscaling/anti-aliasing solution called PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution).

Additional reports indicate that the console may have 28% more system memory and pack the same CPU but clocked at up to 3.85GHz for enhanced performance. A custom machine learning architecture and AI accelerator are also said to be on the agenda.

What Games Will the PS5 Pro Play?

Of course, you can expect all the games that run on your regular PS5 to also run on the PS5 Pro—anything else would be a monumental misstep. But it also sounds like we'll get some Pro-specific, remastered-style updates, referred to as "Enhanced" Games.

The Verge's sources familiar with the plan said Sony is asking game developers to create graphical modes in their games exclusively for the PS5 Pro. In this mode, the game would use PSSR to upscale to 4K with added or enhanced ray tracing, all while hitting 60 fps.

Games that meet Sony's request will be labeled "Enhanced." Unlike remakes, it sounds like Sony expects these enhancements to come as a patch rather than a whole new release of the game. By the same token, Sony expects game developers to start releasing games that support both the PS5 and PS5 Pro consoles.

There's also word that Sony is looking into a "super boost mode" for games that came out before the Pro launches, which could let them run at higher and/or more stable frame rates and possibly even higher resolutions on the PS5 Pro.

What Will the PS5 Pro Look Like?

When the PS5 was first revealed, its appearance set the internet abuzz. Aesthetics aside, its large and bulky design made it an awkward fit for many home entertainment setups. This was largely rectified with the release of the PS5 Slim, which is arguably less intrusive when it comes to matching your living room décor.

In terms of the PS5 Pro, we haven't yet received any leaks or rumors regarding its physical appearance. Looking back at the PS4 Pro, it was slightly larger than the standard PS4 with a very similar design aesthetic. However, this comparison should be taken with a grain of salt since the PS4 was never considered a particularly svelte machine itself.

It seems we are nearing the next iteration of PlayStation hardware. If the rumors and reports are accurate, it will be more powerful than ever—and potentially keep gamers occupied until the PlayStation 6 and the next-gen Xbox come along.

Stay tuned as we update this story with further leaks and details—and possibly official confirmation—later this year.
