Tyler Junior College Apaches football team members celebrate after making a big play during their game against New Mexico Military Institute on Saturday at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium in Tyler. The Apaches went on to win 21-10.
After dominating most of the game, the Apaches suddenly saw their two-touchdown lead whittled down to four points in the fourth quarter.
TJC then came up with big plays on defense and then offense to secure a 21-10 victory over New Mexico Military Institute on a hot Saturday afternoon on Military Appreciation Day at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium in Tyler.
The Apaches (1-0) forced a three-and-out on NMMI’s first drive of the fourth quarter and took over at their own 35-yard line with 11:05 remaining in the game.
After gaining 10 yards on two carries, Apache quarterback Devion Harris was sacked for a 7-yard loss on third down. However, TJC picked up the first down on a 15-yard run by running back Jaylon Bolden on fourth-and-13.
Bolden gained another 10 yards on the next play before Harris connected with wide receiver Jalen Preston for a 23-yard gain to the NMMI 15. Bolden then carried the ball twice for 13 yards to set up a 2-yard touchdown run by Harris with 4:03 left in the game.
Preston’s 23-yard reception was a key play in the drive as it moved the chains and helped set up the touchdown. It also came on a third-and-10 play.
“That was a big play,” Bolden said. “We needed that to keep the drive going. We knew we had to score on that drive.”
Harris agreed, saying Preston made a great play on the ball.
“He went up and got it,” Harris added. “That was a big play for us.”
Preston said he knew he had to come down with the ball on that play.
“I had to make a play for my team,” Preston added. “I knew I had to get open and get the ball. I had to do my part.”
Preston finished the game with three catches for 59 yards. Bolden led TJC in rushing with 79 yards on 16 carries, while Harris added 53 yards on 14 carries.
Harris also completed 10 of 17 passes for 129 yards and one touchdown. He was sacked three times.
“We played hard, but we made a lot of mistakes,” Bolden said. “We have to clean those up before next week.”
Harris said he was pleased with the way his team played, especially on defense.
“We played well on defense,” Harris added. “We have to get better on offense, but we played well on defense.”
TJC’s defense held NMMI to 195 yards of total offense, including just 53 yards rushing on 24 attempts. The Apaches also forced two turnovers and had four sacks.
“We played well on defense,” TJC coach Danny Palmer said. “We gave up some big plays early, but we settled down and played well.”
Palmer said his team also played well on special teams, especially punter Cade Holland, who averaged 44.2 yards on five punts.
“Cade Holland punted the ball well,” Palmer added. “He put them in bad field position several times.”
NMMI took the opening kickoff and drove to the TJC 32-yard line before turning the ball over on downs. The Broncos picked up two first downs on the drive, but they were penalized 15 yards for illegal procedure on a third-and-5 play from the TJC 47.
The Broncos then picked up another first down on a 12-yard pass from quarterback Jaden Millner-Jones to wide receiver Jayden Jones on third-and-15, but they were stopped short of the first down on fourth-and-3 from the TJC 32.
TJC took over at its own 32 and drove to the NMMI 25 before stalling out and turning the ball over on downs. The Apaches picked up two first downs on the drive, but they were penalized 10 yards for holding on a second-and-7 play from the NMMI 35.
The Broncos then took over at their own 25 and drove to the TJC 22 before turning the ball over on downs again. Millner-Jones completed a 17-yard pass to Jones on third-and-10 from the NMMI 32 to keep the drive alive, but the Broncos were stopped short of
