The National Privacy Commission (NPC) has clarified its role regarding the ongoing iris scanning verification process in Plaridel, Bulacan.

Atty. Enrique “Buko” Dela Cruz, a data privacy lawyer, also addressed privacy concerns about Worldcoin’s activity on his Facebook page.

The NPC, an independent body created under the Data Privacy Act of 2012 (RA 10173), aims to ensure compliance with international data protection standards. It seeks to establish a regulatory framework that holds organizations accountable for processing personal data while adhering to global privacy norms.

The NPC encourages individuals with concerns about data privacy violations to reach out for assessment and potential action.

Atty. Dela Cruz shared key legal perspectives on the ongoing iris scanning verification process of Worldcoin in Plaridel, Bulacan.

In a recent Facebook post, he highlighted the following points:

The NPC does not provide approval or clearance for any activities related to the processing of personal data. Instead, it issues Certificates of Registration and Seals of Registration to organizations that have successfully registered with the NPC, in accordance with the Data Privacy Act.

Organizations that engage in the processing of personal data without obtaining the necessary registration with the NPC may face administrative sanctions, including fines and cease-and-desist orders.

The NPC also has the authority to conduct investigations and audits to ensure compliance with the Data Privacy Act.

In case of any concerns or complaints regarding data privacy violations, individuals may reach out to the NPC through its official channels for assessment and potential action.

Atty. Dela Cruz’s post also included a link to the NPC’s website for further information and guidance on data privacy protection.
