Neighborhood Assembly Highlights Infrastructure and Safety Concerns

Apr 20, 2024 at 12:00 pm

A record number of participants attended the fourth neighborhood assembly, held in continuation of the previous monthly meetings. The assembly featured presentations of completed and upcoming projects by local officials, followed by discussions with the public. A key topic was the recently implemented bike lanes, with concerns raised about safety in certain areas. Residents cited hazardous intersections and questioned the effectiveness of a particular stop sign. Officials acknowledged the issues and ongoing efforts to address them, while emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the need for bike lanes.

Residents Voice Concerns Over Local Infrastructure and Safety at Neighborhood Assembly

In a remarkable display of civic engagement, residents flocked to the city's fourth neighborhood assembly, surpassing the attendance of all previous meetings held over the past month. Following a presentation by Councilor Franck Fradin, who outlined completed and upcoming projects, a lively dialogue ensued between elected officials and the community.

One major topic of discussion was the city's bike lanes, with attendees expressing concerns about the recent redesign of certain routes. Particular scrutiny was directed towards the newly installed lanes on Clos Saint-François.

"The roundabout has become a safety hazard," declared one resident. "And the stop sign is pointless. Why not replace it with a yield sign at the intersection with the Rue du Coin-Buffet?"

Similar concerns were raised about the bike lane on Rue de Charbonnière between numbers 69 and 85. Residents labeled the design as "accident-prone."

Councilor Brigitte Jallet, responsible for urban planning, acknowledged the feedback. "We're working with the pedestrian-cyclist group to identify and resolve these issues," she said. "However, we cannot redo all the lanes."

In another part of the city, residents of Rue Louis-Pergaud voiced their apprehension about trees bordering Domaine de Miramion, which they believed were "on the verge of falling onto their property."

Councilor Fradin reassured them that after an expert assessment, the trees were deemed healthy and did not warrant removal.

"We're aware of your concerns," Mayor Vanessa Slimani responded. "We'll make sure to secure the area. We're still gathering information from the assessment, but rest assured, the trees are not at risk of falling."

The assembly also provided a platform for residents to address other neighborhood issues, including street lighting, traffic congestion, and the need for green spaces. Elected officials listened attentively and took note of the feedback, promising to address the matters in due time.

The robust participation at the assembly demonstrated the community's deep engagement in shaping their neighborhood's future. By bringing their concerns and suggestions to the attention of their representatives, residents played a crucial role in fostering dialogue and ultimately improving the quality of life in their community.
