The mystery of the McDonald's McFlurry spoon is finally solved

Experts have revealed the truth behind the distinctive plastic spoon that accompanies every McFlurry

The mystery of the McDonald's McFlurry spoon is finally solved

Since its introduction to McDonald's menu in 1998, the McFlurry has become a staple frozen dessert.

Over the years, it's seen several packaging redesigns and limited-edition flavours, thanks to partnerships with Cadbury, Nestle, and Mars.

But something that might have slipped under the radar for many is the distinctive plastic spoon that accompanies every McFlurry.

A picture of one of the treats with its accompanying spoon was shared on Instagram recently, leaving some fans scratching their heads.

The caption reads: "Is this a straw or some kind of eating device?" Experts chimed in when the post surfaced on X, with one user revealing the mystery: "It's a drill bit spoon."

They explained: "They attach that spoon to a machine via that hole, which then stirs the McFlurry to achieve an ideal mix.

"By doing so, they avoid the need to clean a stirrer after each use and also prevent waste caused by ice cream adhering to the tool."

This notion received further support from another participant, who expressed: "We all wondered thus at some point. Its cool design because the spoon becomes the mixer as well."

Opinions remained divided over the gadget, however, with some customers of the Golden Arches claiming it was simply a spoon and straw.

Outlining the instrument's practicality further, one individual noted in response: "Spoon made for use as the blender attachment used for mixing. Saves on time, labor steps, and machine cost. It is not in fact designed to be used as a straw."

And another commentator clarified its function, adding: "If you've ever seen them make one that thing clicks onto the machine and that's how they blend stuff into the ice cream. It's like that to attach to the spindle piece."

Meanwhile, McDonald's UK recently shook up its menu by discontinuing the Milkybar Raspberry Ripple and Munchies Cookie Dough McFlurry and Mini McFlurry desserts.

They've been replaced by the Galaxy Chocolate McFlurry and the Twix Chocolate McFlurry, priced at £2.19 and £1.59 respectively for the full size and mini versions.

The duo join the regular Maltesers, Oreo, and Smarties McFlurry options, which are priced slightly lower at £1.69 and £1.19.
