Bitcoin rose above $100,000 for the first time on Wednesday, continuing a stunning rally that has seen the world's largest cryptocurrency gain more than 1,000% this year.
The digital coin reached a high of $100,363.09 on the Luxembourg-based Bitstamp exchange at about 13:34 ET. It was last trading up 1.4% on the day at $99,843.44.
Bitcoin has now rallied about 30% since the start of November, fueled by optimism over the upcoming launch of bitcoin futures exchange-traded funds (ETFs). The ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) is set to begin trading on the New York Stock Exchange on Friday, while the VanEck Bitcoin Strategy ETF (XBT) is expected to follow early next week.
Still, bitcoin's gains have slowed in recent days as the initial excitement over the ETFs begins to wane. The digital coin is now up about 45% year-to-date, lagging behind the S&P 500's 25% advance.
Other major cryptocurrencies were also trading higher on Wednesday. No. 2 digital coin ether rose 1.2% to $4,019.12 while dogecoin gained 3.2% to $0.171.
