Metaplanet has unveiled plans to significantly expand its Bitcoin holdings, aiming to reach 10,000 BTC by the end of 2025.
Metaplanet, a Japanese company listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Mothers market, has announced plans to significantly expand its Bitcoin (BTC) holdings, aiming to reach 10,000 BTC by the end of 2025.
This initiative is part of the company's broader strategy to strengthen its Bitcoin Treasury, which was established last year as a response to the economic uncertainties in Japan. Metaplanet began accumulating Bitcoin in 2023, aiming to preserve its value against the backdrop of rising inflation and a depreciating yen.
Speaking about the company's performance in 2024, Simon Gerovich, Metaplanet’s CEO, highlighted its record-breaking achievements during a January 5 announcement.
“2024 was a year of groundbreaking achievements. We set out to build the corporate crypto powerhouse of Asia, and we did just that. From achieving record-breaking milestones to significantly bolstering our Bitcoin reserves, we established ourselves as the leading presence in the corporate Bitcoin landscape,” he said.
Gerovich noted that the company's strategic goal for 2025 is to expand its Bitcoin holdings to 10,000 BTC, aiming to achieve this through the most accretive capital market tools available.
“Together, we're not just building a company but driving a movement. Stay tuned — 2025 is going to be another monumental year. Here's to a year of progress, innovation, and success,” he added.
Metaplanet adopted the top cryptocurrency as a reserve asset last year, following in the footsteps of several other companies that have integrated Bitcoin into their treasury strategies. This trend has been particularly notable among technology and finance firms, with companies like Tesla, Block, and Galaxy Digital holding significant amounts of BTC.
The largest corporate Bitcoin holder is MicroStrategy, which holds 446,400 BTC valued at around $44 billion. According to Bitcoin Treasuries data, Metaplanet is currently the 15th largest corporate Bitcoin holder globally, with 1,762 BTC, showing a nearly 30% profit on its current holdings.
Reaching the 10,000 BTC milestone will require acquiring over 8,000 BTC this year, which could elevate Metaplanet to the top tier of corporate Bitcoin holders worldwide.
