Comprising of six holes of best ball, six holes of alternate shot and six holes of singles, the duo of McIlroy and Scheffler dominated proceedings
Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka of LIV Golf faced off against Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler of the PGA Tour in The Showdown on Tuesday night, with the latter duo emerging victorious.
The best-ball, alternate-shot and singles match was played over six holes at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas, with McIlroy and Scheffler ultimately claiming the spoils. The World No. 1 and No. 3 earned a tidy sum of prize money in the process, which was paid out in the cryptocurrency CRO thanks to tournament sponsor Crypto.com.
The winners each received a total of $10 million, which was paid in the crypto-based coin. Cryptocurrency is admittedly not Scheffler's specialist subject, and when handed the award, he joked: "You know I don't know a whole lot about crypto but this is some good motivation to do some research."
It is unclear what Scheffler and McIlroy will do with the cryptocurrency, but it only adds to their stellar 2024 seasons. Scheffler has now scooped over $63 million in prize money, while McIlroy has comfortably amassed more than $20 million this season.
There were a number of moments throughout The Showdown itself, with much attention being drawn to DeChambeau's Reebok coat, an apparel brand that the U.S. Open champion only just signed with.
Both McIlroy and DeChambeau were also seen using brand-new drivers during proceedings, as the PGA Tour duo comfortably dismantled the LIV pairing of Koepka and DeChambeau.
