“They offered their space free of charge. They went above and beyond,” said Kimber Hotchkiss, an Army Afghanistan veteran who served from 2006–2008.
John and Hillary Jensen of Jensen’s Farms were awarded a Wounded Warrior coin Sunday, Oct. 20 for hosting an ax-throwing event at their farms for military veterans.
“They offered their space free of charge. They went above and beyond,” said Kimber Hotchkiss, an Army Afghanistan veteran who served from 2006–2008. “It was a great time, the ax-throwing. I met a couple of vets at that event I never met before.”
Kristin Ashley, Warrior Leader with the Wounded Warriors, said it was community members like the Jensens who were vital in providing space for veterans to connect with each other and their community members.
Ashley, also an Army veteran, served from 2004-2009, in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
“Coining ceremonies are for people who have done exemplary work and people who our connected to our warriors,” Ashley said regarding the coin presented to the Jensens.
The coin reads, in part, “Missions: To Honor and Empower Wounded Warriors.”
Hotchkiss said events for veterans like the ax-throwing event were a chance to “come as you are, at your own pace, and hang out with people who have had like experiences.”
“The events promote healing and wholeness, creating the space for veterans to tell their stories,” Ashley said, “and bring wholeness to their experience.”
An upcoming parade on Veterans Day will give the community an opportunity to connect with veterans and returned warriors.
“We are super lucky to have Barb Schober in our parade this year. She just turned 100 and was a sergeant in the Marine Corps,” Ashley said.
Schober served during World War II.
“That’s so precious. There were only certain operations for her to serve back then,” Hotchkiss said. “She helped break a lot of of glass ceilings, and there are so many opportunities for us as women in the services now.”
Ashley said 20% of active duty military members are female.
“It’s the demographic that’s increasing the fastest,” said Ashley.
The Defense Department’s 2022 Demographics Profile of the Military Community, released Nov. 6, 2023, shows the total number of service members dropped 2.7% over the previous year, while the percentage of women in the military increased. The profile reported women in active duty military in 2022 at 17.5% and in the selected reserve, women were at 21.6%.
The Veterans Day Parade starts at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11, at Morgan Middle School.
Line-up for the parade begins at 10 a.m. The parade will travel through town before returning to Morgan Middle School.
