Incredibly rare coin signed by Paul McCartney to go to auction

A unique set of commemorative coins honouring Paul McCartney will be sold at auction next month.

In December, The Royal Mint unveiled a coin collection celebrating the Walton-born music icon's career, featuring Paul's iconic and psychedelic Magic Piano as well as several references to his record-breaking career - including piano notes personally chosen by him, a Höfner Violin Bass guitar and the Wings logo.

The design was officially approved by Paul and marked the first time he has appeared on an official UK coin.

Now, a bespoke set of presentation edition gold and silver coins honouring Paul will go under the hammer.

Struck in five kilogram formats, just one gold and four silver pieces are available for collectors, and they will be presented through this Stack’s Bowers Galleries auction.

The gold five kilogram piece represents the largest gold proof coin produced as part of The Royal Mint’s Music Legends series.

It took more than 250 hours to make, including three days of polishing, and was hand-signed by Paul during his 2024 'Got Back' tour in Paris. The winning bidder will receive a short video from Paul himself congratulating them on their acquisition.

Only four of the silver five kilogram pieces exist in this format, excluding a fifth example that was gifted to Paul.

Like the gold counterpart, these silver coins are the largest silver Proof coins in the Music Legends series.

Rebecca Morgan, director of commemorative coin at The Royal Mint said: "This is an exciting opportunity for collectors and fans of Paul McCartney to own a unique item celebrating one of the most influential music artists and songwriters of all time.

"Each coin available at auction is a testament to the exceptional skills of our craftspeople at The Royal Mint.

"Taking hundreds of hours to produce, the masterworks crafted from gold and five kilogram feature highlights from Paul’s career and his journey to becoming one of Britain’s most successful artists in history. The impressive five kilogram gold coin has also been hand signed by Paul during his ‘Got Back’ tour at the end of last year – a symbol of his personal seal of approval of this iconic one-of-one piece."

Each of the presentation coins is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by Paul McCartney himself.

Paul and The Royal Mint will be donating a percentage of the revenue from this auction to charity.

Brian Kendrella, President of Stack’s Bowers Galleries said: "It's an incredible honour to be working with Paul McCartney, MPL Communications and The Royal Mint in bringing such rare and iconic works to public auction.

"Paul McCartney’s timeless music and multigenerational appeal continue to inspire and unite fans across the world, making this a memorable event that all can enjoy."
