Clearstream Will Launch Cryptocurrency Custody Services for Institutional Clients in April 2025
Mar 11, 2025 at 07:35 pm
The new service will initially support Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH). It will be offered by Crypto Finance AG, a company majority-owned by Deutsche Boerse.
Deutsche Boerse’s central securities depository business, Clearstream, will launch cryptocurrency custody services for institutional clients in April 2025, starting with Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH).
The new service, which will also offer custody of staking, lending, and brokerage later, will be provided by Crypto Finance AG, a company majority-owned by Deutsche Boerse.
The move comes amid growing demand for regulated crypto custody solutions in Europe, especially after the introduction of the MiCA framework, which encourages institutions to adopt secure and compliant digital asset solutions.
Clearstream’s New Crypto Custody Services
Clearstream is expanding its existing offering to provide a "one-stop shop" for digital asset services to its 2,500 institutional clients, who will be able to access the new offerings through their existing accounts with Clearstream Banking SA.
"We see a strong demand from our clients for a trusted and regulated framework to invest in and settle digital assets seamlessly," said Jens Hachmeister, head of issuer services and new digital markets at Clearstream.
"With the regulatory clarity provided by MiCA, we are seeing an increasing appetite from institutional investors to invest in the crypto space."
Growing Demand for Crypto Custody Services
The decision to launch crypto custody facilities follows a period of rising demand from institutional investors for such services.
According to Crypto Finance CEO Stijn Vander Straeten, many firms are spending up to €5 million to develop in-house crypto capabilities, making third-party custody solutions a more attractive alternative.
"We are seeing a strong demand for crypto custody services from our institutional clients, who are looking for a trusted and regulated framework to invest in and settle digital assets seamlessly," said Vander Straeten.
"With the regulatory clarity provided by MiCA, which came into full effect in December 2024, and the establishment of clear guidelines for crypto asset service providers, institutions are feeling more confident to invest in cryptocurrencies."
MiCA Regulations and the Rise of Institutional Digital Assets
The European financial market is seeing an increasing interest in regulated digital assets, and Clearstream from Deutsche Boerse is responding by providing crypto custody in an organized and compliant form. This ensures that institutional clients can invest in and hold digital assets safely while remaining compliant with regulations.
Recently, BBVA also announced a new service that will allow clients to buy and hold Bitcoin and Ethereum. Similar to Clearstream, BBVA will be managing the cryptographic keys itself rather than using third-party vendors for this service.
The Future of Crypto Custody Services: What’s Next for Institutions?
Clearstream's entry into the crypto custody business is a significant milestone in the broader institutionalization of digital assets. The focus on offering secure, regulated, and scalable solutions demonstrates its commitment to serving the community of institutional investors. As these services become more widely adopted, it's likely that additional financial institutions will follow suit.
The industry's future will also see an integration of stablecoins and tokenized securities. Clearstream's vision to expand its services beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum showcases the growing demand for diversified investment opportunities in the digital asset landscape. With staking and lending services set to follow, institutions will gain access to a wider variety of financial products.
The institutionalization of digital assets is an ongoing process, and the move by Clearstream is setting the stage for the future of the industry. As market needs evolve and regulation guides the way, we'll likely see more mainstream financial institutions fold crypto custody services into their conventional banking structures.
