California Proposes Steve Jobs American Innovation Coin Design to the US Mint

California Governor Gavin Newsom has proposed to immortalise Steve Jobs on the $1 American Innovation coin to be minted by the US Mint.

Here's What We Know

This programme has been in place since 2018 and allows each state to create its own coin dedicated to a significant invention or innovator. Jobs, being a Californian, perfectly embodies the spirit of the state's innovation, according to Newsom.

The founder of Apple and Pixar changed the whole world. He created Toy Story, the first cartoon made entirely on a computer. But most importantly, he made computers convenient for everyone. The Apple II was the first computer that could be bought and used at home, and the Macintosh made computers simple and easy to understand thanks to a screen where everything looked like paper.

"Our goal is to make technology accessible and convenient for ordinary people," Jobs said. This approach led to the emergence of the iPod, iPhone and iPad - devices that changed the way we perceive the digital world.

The proposal is currently being considered by the Mint Advisory Committee. The preliminary design includes an image of Jobs in his iconic black sweater and glasses, but it may still be changed.

The coin is scheduled to be released in 2026.
