BlackRock's Minimal Involvement in Fund Tokenization on Hedera Clarifies Market Misconceptions

Apr 25, 2024 at 09:51 am

Responding to market confusion surrounding BlackRock's role in Hedera blockchain tokenization, Archax CEO Graham Rodford clarified that the asset manager was not directly involved. Despite tokenizing the ICS US Treasury Fund on Hedera, Rodford emphasized that Archax approaches investment managers for long-term relationships but does not necessarily require their involvement in the tokenization process. Rodford's comments shed light on the nuances of tokenization initiatives and the varying levels of engagement by participating entities.

BlackRock's Limited Role in Fund Tokenization on Hedera Clears Market Misconceptions

London, April 26, 2024 - Archax CEO and Co-Founder Graham Rodford has clarified BlackRock's involvement in the tokenization of funds on the Hedera blockchain, a development that initially sparked a brief price surge for Hedera's (HBAR) token.

Following the announcement that the ICS US Treasury Fund would be tokenized by BlackRock, the largest asset manager globally, the market initially interpreted the news as a direct collaboration between BlackRock and the Hedera platform. This perception fueled a surge in the value of HBAR by over 100% within a single trading day.

However, subsequent clarifications revealed that BlackRock's role was limited to being "aware" of the tokenization process, rather than actively participating. This revelation tempered the initial enthusiasm in the market, leading to a sell-off that dragged HBAR's price down by 22% from its intraday high of $0.1776. As of the time of writing, HBAR is trading at $0.125.

"If we decide to tokenize, we don't necessarily need to approach the investment manager, but we always do because we want to foster long-term relationships," explained Rodford in an X platform post. "The investment manager's level of involvement can vary, but both abrdn and BlackRock were aware that we were tokenizing on Hedera."

Archax, a regulated digital asset exchange and custodian, played a pivotal role in the tokenization process. The company, in collaboration with Ownera, executed the tokenization of the BlackRock fund on the Hedera network.

"The initial announcement was misinterpreted by the crypto community, leading to an overexuberant market response," said a spokesperson for Hedera. "We emphasize the importance of accurate information to avoid such misconceptions."

As the tokenization of financial assets on blockchain platforms gains traction, industry experts urge investors to exercise due diligence and seek clarity on the extent of participation by major market players. Transparent and accurate information is crucial to prevent market distortions and ensure informed decision-making.
