The iconic Oak Quarter’s History
This coin was design as part of the State Quarters Program in December 1997. It was part of a legislation signed by the then President Bill Clinton. Starting in January 1999, each of the 50 states would be celebrated on a unique commemorative Quarter Dollar coin. The coins were released in batches of five per year, following the order in which the states ratified the Constitution or joined the Union.
Connecticut’s quarter has a beautiful intricate design of the legendary Charter Oak, the tree that famously hid the Connecticut Charter in 1687 to keep it safe from British authorities. To have more context, King Charles II of England granted Connecticut a royal charter in 1662, allowing the colony a significant degree of self-rule. Captain Joseph Wadsworth, a local patriot, hid it inside the hollow of a massive white oak tree to keep it out of Governor Andros’s hands.
The Charter Oak remained a potent symbol of Connecticut’s independent spirit. The great tree stood until it was felled by a storm in 1856, and its wood was later used to craft commemorative items, including a chair that remains in the State Capitol.
How Coins Are Graded
However, the state of the coin also plays a significant part in how much money it can raise during an auction. For this reason, collectors have created a graded system to catalogue how deteriorated –or well-kept– a coin is before being put on sale for the public:
* Mint State (MS): A coin that appears to be fresh from the mint, with no signs of wear or tear on its surfaces or edges. These coins are usually kept in protective sleeves or slabs to maintain their pristine condition.
* About Uncirculated (AU): Coins that have been handled and used to a limited extent, showing slight traces of wear on the highest points of the design. However, the majority of the original mint luster is still visible on these coins.
* Extremely Fine (XF): Coins that have been circulated for a longer period, displaying moderate wear on the design elements. Despite the signs of use, these coins still retain a significant portion of their original mint luster.
* Fine (F): Coins that have been extensively circulated, showing noticeable wear on the design elements and losing most of their original mint luster. However, the major details of the coin's design are still fully visible.
* Very Good (VG): Coins that have been heavily circulated, exhibiting significant wear on the design elements and losing almost all of their original mint luster. The major details of the coin's design are still visible, but they may be flattened or merged.
* Good (G): Coins that have been extensively circulated and are showing advanced stages of wear. The design elements are barely visible, and the coin's surfaces may be covered in scratches or other imperfections.
* Fair (FR): Coins that are so heavily worn that only the outlines of the design elements are still visible. The coin's surfaces are usually damaged or altered, and the coin may be bent or misshapen.
* Poor (PR): Coins that are so heavily worn that the design elements are almost completely obliterated. The coin's surfaces are extensively damaged or altered, and the coin may be bent or misshapen to the point of being unrecognizable.
