Italy’s largest banking group, Intesa Sanpaolo, has reportedly made its first Bitcoin (BTC) purchase, according to leaked internal emails. The emails, which were later confirmed by the bank, show that Intesa purchased 11 BTC on Jan. 13. The total value of the purchase at the time was around $1 million.

This marks the first time a major Italian bank has directly purchased Bitcoin. The move comes as several global banking giants, including Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, have expressed interest in offering cryptocurrency services to their clients.

Intesa’s Bitcoin purchase is also notable given the bank’s previous skepticism toward cryptocurrencies. In 2021, Intesa CEO Carlo Messina said that crypto is “not a currency” and that people should “be careful” when investing in it.

However, Messina’s tone has shifted in recent months. In an interview with Class CNBC in January, Messina said that a big European bank “cannot ignore” the growing demand from customers looking to invest in crypto.

Intesa’s Bitcoin purchase is likely to further increase interest from Italian investors in cryptocurrencies. A recent survey by the Italian fintech association Assofintech found that 42% of Italians are interested in investing in crypto.
