Insiders holding large amounts of tokens are known to hype up a project to attract capital, only to suddenly sell all their holdings, essentially killing the token and rendering the project worthless.

In early 2024, the figure stood at $90 million across 21 recorded incidents of rug pulls, most of which originated from DeFi protocols, NFT projects and memecoins.

However, by early 2025, only seven incidents of rug pulls have been reported, marking a 66% decrease in frequency year-over-year. The figure is also a significant drop from the 24 incidents recorded in early 2023.

Despite fewer reported cases, the incidents of rug pulls have caused more financial damage this year, as most of the losses are linked to one incident involving real-world asset (RWA) crypto project Mantra (OM).

Earlier this month, the OM token plunged from a high of $6.35 to a low of $0.37 after at least 17 wallets transferred 43.6 million OM tokens (around $227 million at the time) to crypto exchanges.

Following the incident, OM fell sharply, suggesting that the wallets belonged to insiders who sold their tokens and left other investors with huge losses.

According to DappRadar, the project’s crypto token, OМ, began 2025 at a price of around $1.37, but quickly rose to reach a high of $6.35 in March.

However, the token then plunged to lows of $0.37 after at least 17 wallets sold a large portion of their OM tokens.

“By early 2_24, the crypto ecosystem had already lost nearly $90 million to reported rugpulls, a figure that has now risen to nearly $6 billion by early 2025,” concludes DappRadar.
