The Panama City Council has voted in favor of allowing citizens to pay taxes, fines, fees and permits using cryptocurrencies, ranging from Bitcoin (BTC/USD) and Ethereum (ETH/USD) to USD Coin (USDC/USD) and Tether (USDT/USD).

What Happened: The initiative was spearheaded by Panama City Councilman and tech entrepreneur Mayer Mizrachi, who confirmed the development in a public post on Tuesday.

The new policy will allow citizens to pay taxes, fines, fees and permits in a variety of cryptocurrencies.

“Good news! Today, the capital city council voted to accept crypto payments for taxes, fines, permits and more,” Mizrachi announced.

“This has been a goal of mine for a long time, and I'm proud that we were able to get it done. We are the first city in Central America to accept crypto payments.”

Credit for the achievement also goes to the city’s administration and the bank who "were able to find a solution to comply with national monetary laws."

According to Mizrachi, previous administrations had attempted to pass a bill in the senate to enable this, but it was never successful.

“Prior administrations tried to push a bill in the senate to make this possible, but they never did and it was always a big topic of discussion. We found a simple way to do it without new legislation. Legally, public institutions must receive funds in dollars, so we partnered with a bank who will receive the crypto and convert it on the spot to USD.”
