A commemorative 2012 Olympic 50p coin has sold for almost 500 times its face value after a mini bidding war broke out at auction.

The coin was minted to mark the London games and features an image of a swimmer on the tail side.

They explained: “The design was created by Jonathan Olliffe, and it depicts a swimmer in action with fluid lines struck into the metal representing the waves.
