Aave Labs has unveiled Project Horizon, a comprehensive initiative focused on deepening the integration of institutional Real-World Assets (RWAs) into the decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem.

Project Horizon is designed with the goal of aligning with institutional compliance requirements while preserving the efficiency and transparency that defines DeFi. The initiative introduces a structured pathway for institutions and tokenization platforms to leverage decentralized finance in a manner that complies with relevant regulations.

One of its core features allows institutions to use tokenized money market funds (MMFs) as collateral when borrowing stablecoins like GHO and USDC. Future plans include expanding to other forms of RWAs and further enhancing institutional access to DeFi liquidity.

Institutions will be able to mint stablecoin on-chain using tokenized MMFs or other institutionally relevant assets as collateral.

Highligtighted by Aave Labs CEO Stani Kulechov, a lack of necessary infrastructure poses a barrier for large-scale institutional participation in DeFi.

To support this initiative, Aave will be proposing the launching of a licensed instance of the Aave Protocol through the Aave DAO.

This proposal will form the basis for all projects operating under the Horizon initiative. Horizon’s RWA solution will initially operate within Aave V3 as a licensed instance, and subsequently transition to a custom Aave V4 deployment when it becomes available.

Aave Labs’ expansion into RWAs comes amid significant growth in the sector.

Data from RWA.xyz reveals that the total value of on-chain RWAs has surged 17.51% over the past month to reach $18.13 billion. Meanwhile, the number of unique asset holders has increased by 5%, pushing the total past 89,818.
