Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Invests in a Company That Supports the Cryptocurrency Market
Jan 18, 2025 at 07:00 pm
Despite his well-known disdain for cryptocurrencies, the ‘Oracle Of Omaha’ – Warren Buffett‘s Berkshire Hathaway Inc BRK BRK has invested in a company
Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc (NYSE: BRK-A) (NYSE: BRK-B) has been buying shares of a company that began offering support for cryptocurrencies in 2022 and is up 27.43% for the year.
What Happened: Initially investing $500 million in a Series G funding round, Buffett’s Berkshire has now added 0.3% of Nu Holdings Ltd (NYSE:NU) to its portfolio, which now totals 18 months.
Berkshire began adding to Nu, a Brazilian digital banking company that launched its cryptocurrency platform Nubank Cripto last year, with 0.1% of the company in the fourth quarter of 2022.
This increased to 0.4% in the third quarter of fiscal 2025.
Launching with support for Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC), Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH), and Polygon (CRYPTO: MATIC), Nubank Cripto added Chainlink (CRYPTO: LINK) and Uniswap (CRYPTO: UNI) to the platform in 2023.
The platform allows users to send, receive, and convert cryptocurrencies, which also includes stablecoins such as USD Coin.
“Bitcoin is probably best described as being probably rat poison squared,” Buffett said of the cryptocurrency in 2018 during Berkshire Hathaway Inc.'s annual shareholder meeting.
Despite Buffett’s comments on Bitcoin, Berkshire’s investment in Nu has performed well.

Why It Matters: Berkshire held 86.438 million shares of Nu, valued at $1.179 billion, at the end of the third quarter, according to its 13F filings.
With data for the fourth quarter not yet available, if we assume that Berkshire’s holdings in Nu did not change during this period, the value of these shares would have declined by 24.10% to be valued at around $892.03 million as of Dec. 31, when the share price was $10.36, compared to $13.65 on Sept. 30, 2024.
However, for the year 2024, Nu shares are up 27.43%, according to data compiled by Benzinga Pro.
While Nu does offer cryptocurrency services, one could argue in favor of Buffett, as it is not primarily a cryptocurrency company.
However, back in 2018, Buffett also said of cryptocurrencies, “I can say almost with certainty that they will come to a bad ending.”
