Ethereum co-creator sells meme coins, donates ETH to Tornado Cash devs
Co-founder of the Ethereum blockchain and its frontman, Vitalik Buterin, has sold some of the meme coins he held, as well as some USDT stablecoins, to the tune of about $360,000. This sale, which took place within half an hour, saw him exchange these coins for 140.6 ETH.
According to the Analytics account on the X social media network @spotonchain, Buterin had received all these meme coins for free, from their developers, and he decided to sell some of them. The account also noted that Buterin had sent 100 ETH (about $242,000) to the “Free Alexey & Roman” campaign, which supports the legal defense of Tornado Cash developers who are in custody — Alexey Pertsev and Roman Storm. The tweet did not specify, though, whether Buterin sent the 100 ETH earned on the meme coin sale or if it was different funds.
This sale coincided with a marginal ETH price slump of less than 1%. Notably, crypto sales initiated by influencers of Buterin’s scale often have an impact on crypto prices, though it may not be visible immediately. At the time of writing, the second largest cryptocurrency is changing hands at $2,416 after a 2.2% increase in the last 24 hours.
