Building a typical tower with a height of 60 metres in the Middle Ages was no easy task: it would have required between three and 10 years of work.
The remaining towers in Bologna are a testament to the city's rich medieval past. These imposing structures once numbered over a hundred, but today only about twenty survive. They were built by wealthy families as a display of power and prestige, and also served as defensive structures during times of conflict.
