Tokyo-Listed Metaplanet Now Holds 2,031 Bitcoin Worth $196M, Ranks 14th Globally

Japanese investment firm Metaplanet announced Monday that it purchased 269 Bitcoin for ¥4 billion ($34 million) as part of its strategy to deploy a portion of its treasury into the leading cryptocurrency.

The Tokyo-listed company’s stock has gained 73% year-to-date, MarketWatch data showed, with the bulk of the increase coming after the announcement of its Bitcoin strategy in July last year.

The latest purchase brings Metaplanet’s total Bitcoin holdings to roughly 2,031 BTC. At today’s prices, the stash is worth about $196 million.

Based on the company’s latest filing, the average purchase price for the additional 269.43 Bitcoin works out to about $44,400 per coin. Including the earlier purchase, Metaplanet’s average purchase price for all its Bitcoin holdings is around $80,700.

With an average purchase price that is significantly lower than the current market price of about $96,900, Metaplanet’s overall Bitcoin investment has increased in value by around 16%.

The investment firm began disclosing its Bitcoin stash in July last year, revealing that it had acquired 1,761.7 Bitcoin for an average price of $74,000 per coin. The company said at the time that the purchase was made as part of its strategy to generate BTC Yield, a key indicator devised by Metaplanet to assess the performance of its Bitcoin acquisition strategy.

The yield is calculated by dividing the net profit generated from Bitcoin price changes over a given period by the total cost incurred in acquiring the Bitcoin. The company said the net profit is calculated on a mark-to-market basis.

According to Metaplanet, the BTC Yield for the July-September quarter of 2024 was 41%. The yield surged to 309% in the fourth quarter of 2024 and stands at around 15% quarter to date through February 17, 2025.

The company’s filings also showed that its total net assets increased to ¥128.7 billion ($980 million) at the end of December, up from about ¥80 billion at the end of March last year.
