Sam Bankman-Fried, the incarcerated founder of bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX, is now detained in a correctional facility in Los Angeles, California.
According to the inmate database of the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP), Bankman-Fried is currently at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Terminal Island.
The 33-year-old was previously held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, but the BOP has moved him through a series of facilities. FCI Terminal Island accommodates over 900 low-security male inmates.
Last month, Bankman-Fried was at the Federal Transfer Center in Oklahoma City, which houses inmates being transported through the prison system. From there, he was moved to a medium-security federal prison in Victorville, California, before his arrival at FCI Terminal Island.
Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years in prison after being found guilty of charges related to the misuse of FTX customer funds. The collapse of the crypto exchange, one of the largest in the world, marked a significant event in the 2022 digital asset bear market.
His release date is December 2044, but his parents are reportedly making efforts to reduce his sentence.
According to an earlier report by the New York Times, Stanford Law School professors Joseph Bankman and Barbara Fried met with people connected to US President Donald Trump earlier this year to discuss the possibility of clemency for their son. However, political insiders interviewed by Fortune see almost no chance of this happening. A crypto lobbyist interviewed by the outlet put the probability of a pardon at “nearly zero.”
