Thunderbolts' Red Guardian Unveils New Tactics in Marvel Snap

Apr 18, 2024 at 02:59 am

In Marvel Snap's Thunderbolts season, Red Guardian joins the fray as a support card that debuffs enemy units. With the ability to reduce enemy power and remove text effects, Red Guardian complements decks that focus on negative power or manipulating On Reveal abilities. Best paired with Wong, Mystique, or Odin, he enhances damage potential. Sera Surfer, Toxic, and Negative High Evolution decks leverage his debuffing prowess. However, Cosmo and Luke Cage counter his On Reveal ability, making strategic placement crucial. While Red Guardian is a decent support card, his value may not justify spending limited resources unless you already have a strong deck base.

Thunderbolts' Red Guardian Unveils New Tactics in Marvel Snap

Red Guardian Joins Marvel Snap's Thunderbolts, Unveiling New Strategies and Deck Combinations

April marks the arrival of the Thunderbolts season in Marvel Snap, introducing a fresh roster of cards inspired by the renowned factions of the same name. Among them is the Red Guardian, a formidable member of the Thunderbolts team led by Bucky Barnes.

In the Marvel universe, Red Guardian is a renowned pilot and an exceptional hand-to-hand combatant. In Marvel Snap, he possesses a remarkable support ability that transforms control-based effects into offensive weapons.

Understanding Red Guardian's Abilities

Red Guardian, priced at three Energy and three Power, boasts the following ability: "On Reveal: Afflict the lowest-Power enemy card here with -2 Power and remove its text." While this ability may not seem groundbreaking, it presents a valuable tool to weaken enemy units and potentially sway the outcome of crucial matches.

Acquisition and Strategy

Red Guardian is a series five card, requiring 6,000 tokens for direct purchase through the Weekly Spotlight section of the Token Shop from April 16-23. Additionally, it is available as part of a four-card pool from the Spotlight Caches during the same period.

To maximize Red Guardian's potential, players can synergize it with other cards that enhance its negative Power effects. Wong, with its ability to double all On Reveal effects in the same location, can elevate Red Guardian's damage output to four. Mystique, when played after Wong, can further amplify the damage to eight.

Odin also pairs well with Red Guardian, enabling the reactivation of On Reveal abilities for cards placed in the same location. This synergy can further reduce enemy Power when combined with the Red Guardian, Wong, and Mystique setup.

Moreover, Red Guardian aids in lowering the cost of Abomination's evolved form, while Silver Surfer provides a two-Power boost to all three-Cost cards in play, enhancing Red Guardian's efficacy.

Effective Red Guardian Deck Combinations

Sera Surfer:

  • Red Guardian
  • Silver Surfer
  • Sera
  • Ironheart
  • Hope Summers
  • Sebastian Shaw
  • Gladiator
  • Absorbing Man
  • Forge

This deck capitalizes on Silver Surfer's Power boost for three-Cost cards, allowing Red Guardian to benefit from the increased Power. Sera reduces the Cost of cards in hand, facilitating the play of multiple three-Cost cards in the final turn.

Toxic:

  • Red Guardian
  • Hazmat
  • Luke Cage
  • Debrii
  • Nebula
  • Magik

This deck employs negative Power effects to weaken opponents while bolstering the Power of own units. Hazmat and Luke Cage inflict negative Power, while Debrii creates expendable targets for negative Power effects. Nebula and Magik contribute to gaining Energy and extending the game for effective setup.

Negative High Evolution:

  • Red Guardian
  • Evolved Wasp
  • Evolved Misty Knight
  • Evolved Cyclops
  • Evolved The Thing
  • Scorpion
  • U.S. Agent
  • Man-Thing
  • Hulk
  • Misty Knight

This deck revolves around inflicting negative Power through evolved cards and utilizing Energy conservation to create significant Power in the late game. Misty Knight adds offensive potential by granting bonus Power when Energy is not fully spent in a turn.

Countering Red Guardian Decks

Cosmo:

Cosmo's ability to prevent On Reveal effects at its location poses a threat to Red Guardian, nullifying its negative Power abilities.

Luke Cage:

Luke Cage's Ongoing ability shields cards from receiving negative Power effects, offering protection against Red Guardian's attacks.

Enchantress, Rogue, and Echo:

These Ongoing disruption cards can remove Luke Cage from the field, countering its protective effect against Red Guardian's abilities.

Is Red Guardian Worth Acquiring?

While Red Guardian presents a valuable support card for decks specializing in negative Power effects, its versatility is limited. Its acquisition is not recommended unless players have surplus tokens or Spotlight Keys.

However, for players with ample resources, Red Guardian can complement their collection. Its synergy with other cards can provide strategic advantages in specific deck combinations.
