Symphony of Hues: Pennsylvania Home Embraces Bold Colors for Comfort and Sophistication
Apr 16, 2024 at 05:52 am
This Pennsylvania home is a masterclass in using color to create cozy and inviting spaces with just a touch of the dramatic. Dark-colored walls and furnishings might not be the obvious choice for a large family home, however, when you see the spectacular effects of this recently completed redesign, it all starts to make sense. The property in Penn Valley, Pennsylvania, was built in 2019, its open-plan living design perfect for a family of five and their dogs. The owners enlisted the help of interior designer Brittany Hakimfar of Far Studio to help them create a home that was both family-friendly and elevated, with spaces for everyone to enjoy. ‘We wanted the house to feel warm and intimate even though it’s a fairly large home,’ explains designer Brittany. ‘To do this, we made sure that the spaces the family used regularly, like the kitchen, breakfast room and family room, were all connected and conducive to easy conversation.’ Take a tour around and you’ll see how this was achieved. What you’ll also discover along the way is just how effective dark color schemes can be in creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere with a layered look and a sense of drama. Designer Brittany Hakimfar shows us around, picking out her personal highlights.
A Symphony of Hues: Pennsylvania Home Masterfully Blends Comfort and Sophistication with Dark and Dramatic Colors
Nestled amidst the rolling hills of Penn Valley, Pennsylvania, a magnificent residence emerges as a testament to the transformative power of color. Deviating from the traditional light and airy aesthetic often associated with family homes, this 2019-built abode boldly embraces deep and alluring hues, creating an environment that is both warm and welcoming with an undeniable touch of drama.
Architect and interior designer Brittany Hakimfar of Far Studio orchestrated this extraordinary transformation, meticulously crafting a space that caters to the needs of a family of five and their beloved canine companions. Brittany's vision was to foster a sense of intimacy and togetherness while elevating the overall aesthetic of the home.
"We wanted the house to feel warm and inviting, even though it's a large home," explains Brittany. "To achieve this, we made sure the spaces the family used regularly, like the kitchen, breakfast room, and family room, were all connected and well-suited for open and easy conversation."
Upon entering the home, one is immediately struck by the harmonious interplay of dark and light tones. Walls adorned in deep shades of navy, emerald, and charcoal create a sense of cozy sophistication, while white accents and abundant natural light balance the palette, preventing any sense of heaviness.
The kitchen epitomizes this masterful use of contrasting hues. Custom black cabinetry adds a touch of drama to the space, while the surrounding white cabinets and Calacatta marble countertops provide a clean and airy feel. The result is an inviting space that encourages both culinary adventures and family gatherings.
Continuing through the home, one encounters a series of carefully curated spaces, each boasting its own unique color scheme and design elements. The family room exudes a casual elegance with its deep gray walls, plush graphite sofa, and custom black marble fireplace surround.
In stark contrast to the predominantly dark tones found elsewhere in the home, the living room boldly features Off Black walls from Farrow & Ball. This dramatic backdrop provides a stunning canvas for the room's statement piece: an oversized abstract painting that bursts with vibrant hues.
The dining room is a symphony of sophistication, its walls adorned with a rich Philip Jeffries plaster wallpaper in a deep chocolate brown. Farrow & Ball's Mahogany panelling adds warmth to the space, while a contemporary chandelier from Nickey Kehoe creates a glamorous focal point.
The master bedroom suite offers a serene retreat, its walls enveloped in a soft Kravet wallcovering in a calming shade of dove gray. The room's centerpiece is a custom bed upholstered in a textured Lee Jofa bouclé fabric, its soft curves and neutral hue inviting relaxation.
Each of the children's bedrooms has been designed with a specific color theme in mind, adding a touch of whimsy and personalization to the home. The lilac-hued room features a whimsical hand-painted floral mural, while the blue room boasts a custom window seat and built-in storage solutions, creating a charming space for study and play.
The home's powder room is a testament to the transformative power of dark colors in even the smallest of spaces. The walls are painted in a deep shade of Farrow & Ball's Brinjal, creating a sophisticated and dramatic atmosphere. A custom floating marble vanity adds a touch of luxury, while the rich hues of the paint and marble evoke a sense of grandeur.
Throughout the home, Brittany has deftly incorporated natural materials to add depth and texture to the spaces. Woven jute and sisal rugs, warm wood accents, and stone surfaces create a sense of organic warmth that balances the bold color palette.
"We really wanted to introduce natural materials and use them to add depth and warmth to the space," says Brittany. "So, we chose a slate coffee table and a woven jute and sisal rug to complete the look."
The meticulous attention to detail and thoughtful use of color and materials in this Pennsylvania home have resulted in a truly extraordinary creation. Far Studio has masterfully demonstrated how dark and dramatic hues can be used to create a space that is both inviting and visually stunning, a testament to the transformative power of design.
