Scotland took one big step towards another campaign in Nations League A on Thursday night with a 1-0 win in Greece to take back to Hampden Park to defend for Sunday evening’s second leg.
Scott McTominay scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot in the first half to continue his strong goalscoring form for his country to Steve Clarke’s side their third straight victory.
The current run of form comes off the back of just one win (which came against Gibraltar) in 16 matches from September 2023 to October last year.
Late winners against Croatia and Poland in their previous two outings saw them climb off the bottom of the Nations League A1 table, with Andy Robertson’s 93rd minute winner in taking them up to third place at Poland’s expense, to book their place in this promotion/relegation play-off.
Greece won five of their six matches, including a notable win at Wembley, in their Nations League B campaign, but missed out on top spot due to their head-to-head goal difference with England, forcing them to play this two-legged play-off to earn promotion to the top flight for the first time.
Ivan Jovanovic’s side head to Glasgow having won six of their last eight matches and have a 100% winning record away from home since the Serbian took over the Greek national side, including a notable win at England, inflicting their first competitive home defeat since 2021.
Scotland now lead the head-to-head between the two sides 2-1 from their three matches they’ve played against each other prior to Sunday’s meeting, and the Balkan side have lost on their only previous visit to Glasgow, thought that did come 30 years ago.
