Rev. Lorenzo Sewell Launches His Own Meme Coin, Predictably the Crypto Community Reacted Sceptically

Detroit pastor Lorenzo Sewell, who delivered a prayer at Donald Trump’s inauguration, has announced the launch of his official meme coin. The coin will be used for charity purposes, but crypto community members reacted skeptically, to say the least.

The crypto community was surprised by the total absence of cryptocurrency in Donald Trump’s speech. However, photos of Trump with Sen. Lummis, who fought against Operation Choke Point 2.0 and proposed the creation of a Strategic Bitcoin reserve, were met with enthusiasm.

One of the most striking moments of the inauguration was the three-minute-long MLK-heavy prayer delivered by Michigan pastor Rev. Lorenzo Sewell. He began his prayer by thanking the Lord for the “millimeter miracle” that saved the future president from a bullet during the July murder attempt. Sewell chanted his words, referencing the famous “I Have a Dream” speech and Declaration of Independence, and said that America will begin to dream again.

Multiple references to Martin Luther King’s speech may be explained by the fact that Trump’s inauguration coincided with MLK Day. And Sewell mentioned Dr. King again that night—in a short video on X, where Sewell announced the launch of his official crypto token. The pastor urged everyone to buy it to help the ministry and concluded that “we know that King’s dream can only be fulfilled if we acknowledge that people are living in a nightmare.”

The announcement sparked outrage in the comments section. But before we delve into Sewell’s meme coin and the community’s response, let’s quickly introduce the pastor.

Rev. Sewell’s checkered past

Those who followed Trump’s campaign were likely unsurprised to see Sewell delivering a prayer at the President’s inauguration, as the pastor was actively involved in the 2024 campaign, hosting pro-Trump Christian events, speaking alongside the future president at church events, and addressing the public at a Republican National Convention.

Prior to joining the Trump bandwagon, Sewell served as pastor at the non-denominational 180 Church. Rev. Sewell doesn’t separate religion from politics, stating that the gospel message is the political message and the Bible is a political book. “You cannot be a spiritual person and not be political,” said Sewell. Fox News quotes him saying that he doesn’t believe all Democrats are demons, but their platform is demonic.

Sewell’s passion and energy extend beyond his prayers. Not everyone in the 180 Church was happy to have a pro-Trump pastor, and on one occasion, the political clash resulted in Sewell getting handcuffed. His adversaries drilled new locks into the church door, and the pastor was met by the police as he attempted to enter the church. After several weeks of holding services elsewhere, including a methadone clinic, Sewell was able to regain control of his church. It was only a year before Sewell first met Trump and joined his 2024 campaign.

During that roundtable meeting, Sewell expressed his admiration for Trump, saying the 45th President was charged with 34 felonies and went on to raise $52.8 million in 24 hours. Felonies that don’t stop one on the way to glory is something that Sewell understands very well as it reflects his own life experiences. According to reports, Sewell was a gang leader in the 90s before a 1999 spiritual revelation led him on a religious path.

Pastor’s meme coin gets roasted

The pastor’s $Lorenzo meme coin doesn’t seem that different from the TRUMP and MELANIA tokens that garnered substantial amounts of criticism following their launch. However, it appears that the pastor’s coin attracted the most ire.

In the X post, Sewell says he opted not to sell the Lorenzo tokens and instead permanently locked them in the Liquidity Pool to earn fees and let the token flourish. In the video, Sewell asks people to “do [him] a favor” and “buy the official Lorenzo Sewell coin.” However, the public was critical of the move.
