Rare 50p coin could make you rich - and one detail is worth £100 in circulation

A rare Sir Isaac Newton 50p coin could be stashed away in your piggy bank or down the back of the sofa - and it's worth a small fortune.

Collectors have been going wild for a rare coin in circulation - and it's no secret that certain pieces can be highly valuable compared to others.

In recent months, we've seen a manner of change go viral on social media, with TikTok users being urged to check their pockets and stashes for anything that could be worth a mint.

Now over on the platform, user @CoinCollectingWizard has explained why the Sir Issac Newton 50p is worth looking out for.

The piece was first issued in 2017 and it's quite popular among collectors.

In a recent video, the user said: "This 50p could have an error making it valuable.

"The Sir Isaac Newton 50p is one of the most popular 50p's in circulation, shortly after it was issued in 2017.

"What you are looking for is for the obverse to have several extra lines across Queen Elizabeth's portrait. If your coin has these lines, then congratulations you have found it."

He continued: "This is thought to be an error caused during the striking process, a result of what is known as a dye clash.

"Interestingly, the extra lines aren't grooves scratched into the surface of the coin.

"But rather whiskers standing slightly proud of the surface.

"Although we don't know for sure how many of these error coins are in circulation, they're thought to be extremely rare.

"They've even been listed on the secondary market for more than 100 times face value."

If you think you own a rare coin, there's a number of things you should do.

Firstly, get a professional valuation, this could be based on its rarity, condition and historical significance.

You can get a free valuation from an expert, like the Royal Mint.

You could also research the coin which helps you learn more about its rarity, history and potential value.

There are books, websites and a guide which could help you understand more about your coin.
