Rare Brexit 50p coin in mint condition sells for £4,000 on eBay

A rare 50p coin to mark the UK's exit from the European Union is being sold on eBay for a staggering £4,000.

The coin, which was minted on January 31, 2020, features Queen Elizabeth II on one side and the inscription "Peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations" on the other.

It is listed on eBay as: "Rare Brexit 50p coin in mint condition."

The listing adds that the coin is being sold for £4,000 with a £1.83 delivery charge.

According to Royal Mint distributor Change Checker, 10,001,000 of these coins were minted, making it the only official UK coin to commemorate leaving the EU.

The minting of the coins was ordered by Sajid Javid, then Chancellor of the Exchequer and marks the date that the UK left the EU.

A Royal Mint spokesperson said: "Ultimately a coin is worth what a collector is willing to pay for it, but there are some factors you should consider before committing to a price.

“This can include the condition of the coin, its design, mintage figure and what it’s made of.

"If people are looking to sell a coin on the secondary market, and the coin has an unusually low mintage, then it might sell for higher than its face value."
