President Trump to attend Super Bowl LIX, making history as first sitting president to do so

The big event comes just weeks after a terror attack on New Year's Day killed 10 people on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter.

President Donald Trump will be the first sitting President to attend a Super Bowl in-person when he attends Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans on Sunday night.

He will be joined by Louisiana native Speaker of the House Mike Johnson at the big event, which comes just weeks after a terror attack on New Year’s Day killed 10 people on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter. The Ceasars Superdome is hosting the game, just a short walk from the site of the attack.

Louisiana Congressman Troy Carter said his district and city are ready to host it’s 11th Super Bowl.

“We have hosted more super bowls than any other city, we’re very proud of that,” Carter said. “From a security standpoint, we have SEAR 1 security, which means we have the greatest level of local state and federal agencies on the ground, boots on the ground, securing the area.”

More than 100 million people are expected to tune in to Sunday night’s game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.

The high level of attention to the game can make way for lighthearted bets between high profile fans of each team.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas and Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker made a bet earlier in the week with Philadelphia Cheesesteaks and Kansas City Barbecue on the line.

Even though the Kansas City Chiefs are located on the Missouri side of the river, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro made a bet similar to the two mayors’.

If the Chiefs win, Shapiro will send Kelly Philly Cheesesteaks and soft pretzels. If the Eagles win, Kelly will send Shapiro premium black angus steaks from Kansas’ own Creekstone Farms.

While Trump will be the first sitting President at the Super Bowl, there is a long history of Presidents enjoying and finding ways to get involved with the Super Bowl.

According to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the first presidential Super Bowl coin toss was from Ronald Reagan in 1985 via satellite from the Oval Office. 1985 is also the first time Inauguration Day and the Super Bowl coincided.

Former President George H. W. Bush did the coin toss in-person at Super Bowl XXXVI in New Orleans in 2002. His coin toss was when his son, former President George W. Bush, was in office and came just months after the September 11 terror attacks.

Additionally, former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama are both known to have hosted Super Bowl watch parties from the White House.

The Kansas City Chiefs are favored to win and take home a historic third Super Bowl victory in a row.
