The Luka Doncic Trade: A Move That Has the NBA World in Shock

In a move that seemingly has plenty of folks around the league still in shock, the Dallas Mavericks traded the longtime face of their franchise in guard Luka Doncic

The Dallas Mavericks have agreed to trade superstar guard Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for big man Anthony Davis in a blockbuster deal, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

The Lakers will also send the No. 35 pick in the 2025 NBA draft and a future second-round pick to the Mavericks, Wojnarowski adds.

Doncic, 24, is a three-time All-Star and two-time All-NBA First Team selection. He averaged 29.2 points, 9.6 assists and 8.9 rebounds per game last season, leading the Mavericks to the Western Conference finals, where they lost to the eventual champion Boston Celtics in five games.

Davis, 30, is an eight-time All-Star and four-time All-NBA First Team selection. He averaged 24.4 points, 12.1 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game last season, helping the Lakers reach the playoffs as the No. 13 seed in the West before they were eliminated by the Phoenix Suns in the first round.

The trade marks a significant shift in direction for the Mavericks, who have built their team around Doncic since drafting him with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NBA draft. Doncic has quickly become one of the most popular and recognizable players in the league, leading the Mavericks to the playoffs in each of his first four seasons.

The Lakers, meanwhile, are hoping to add Doncic to a young core that already includes Davis, LeBron James and Rui Hachimura. The Lakers missed the playoffs in 2023 and 2024 before making a first-round exit last season.

The trade is expected to be completed before the Feb. 9 trade deadline, pending physicals and final roster moves, per Wojnarowski.
