Fantasy Baseball: Stock Watch - Players Falling Off the Cliff

May 03, 2024 at 07:19 am

The weekly fantasy baseball stock report identifies players whose value is on the rise or decline. This week's fallers include Randy Arozarena, Michael Soroka, and Bo Bichette. Arozarena has struggled at the plate with a low wOBA and wRC+, while Soroka has underperformed as a starter with a high xFIP and low strikeout rate. Bichette's wOBA is significantly lower than his career average despite a reduced strikeout rate.

Fantasy Baseball: Stock Watch - Players Falling Off the Cliff

Fantasy Baseball Stock Report: Fallers on the Decline

Every Thursday, we delve into the volatile world of fantasy baseball, assessing the players whose stock is either rising or plummeting. This week, we focus on a handful of players who have failed to live up to expectations, seeing their value dwindle based on their recent performances.

Randy Arozarena (OF - TB)

Known for his heroic exploits in the postseason, "Playoff Randy" has been ice cold so far this season. Among qualified hitters, he has the third-worst wOBA (.213) and the fourth-worst wRC+ (39), a testament to his struggles at the plate.

While his extraordinarily low BABIP of .173 suggests a degree of bad luck, it's still alarming to see a player who bats in the heart of the Rays' lineup every day with a dismal -0.6 WAR. The hope remains that Arozarena can rediscover his form and boost his fantasy stock.

Michael Soroka (SP - CWS)

On the pitching front, Michael Soroka has arguably been the most disappointing qualified starter in the league. His xFIP ranks dead last at 5.69, while his strikeout rate is abysmally low at just 10.6%. Adding insult to injury, Soroka's walk rate is the third-highest (12.6%), and his HR/9 is the sixth-highest (1.89).

There's little to be excited about in Soroka's profile right now. Opposing hitters are having a field day, and fantasy managers who invested heavily in him are left scratching their heads.

Bo Bichette (SS - TOR)

Another shortstop in the spotlight is Bo Bichette, who has fallen short of expectations this season. Typically known for his high wOBA, Bichette has struggled to find his groove, posting a mere .252 mark so far, significantly lower than his career average of .348.

While Bichette's strikeout rate has dropped to 14.8% this season, it hasn't led to an increase in his on-base percentage. The entire Blue Jays offense has been underperforming, but Bichette's struggles stand out, and fantasy managers are hoping that warmer weather can reignite the bats in Toronto.

Conclusion:

The fantasy baseball landscape is constantly shifting, and these players are just a few examples of those who have seen their stock decline in recent weeks. While it's impossible to predict individual performances with certainty, tracking these trends can help fantasy managers make informed decisions about their rosters. Whether it's a temporary slump or a sign of deeper underlying issues, these players will need to turn things around soon to prove their worth in fantasy lineups.
