Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has revealed a roadmap for the network's next six months
Mar 15, 2025 at 12:15 am
input: Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has revealed a roadmap for the network's next six months, and it's all about scalability, governance, and – surprisingly – decentralized AI.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has shared his vision for the network's next six months, focusing on critical improvements in scalability, governance, and surprisingly, decentralized artificial intelligence (AI).
Speaking at the Good Chain Open Good Value (GCOV) III conference in Tokyo, Buterin emphasized the importance of Layer 1 (L1) infrastructure, governance structures, and decentralization in ensuring Ethereum's long-term sustainability and efficiency.
Among the key priorities for the next six months is scaling Ethereum to handle increased network activity.
“One of the biggest challenges is output and input throughput. How can we make the throughput of Layer 1 higher?” Buterin questioned the audience, highlighting the need for ongoing upgrades to Layer 1 infrastructure.
He explained that if someone wants to add another billion users to Ethereum in the next five years, the network will need to get faster and cheaper to accommodate the influx.
“We need to continue improving L1 efficiency so that we can fit more transactions in the same space and keep it secure and decentralized,” Buterin added.
Beyond infrastructure, Buterin also highlighted the importance of application development in driving adoption and expanding Ethereum's ecosystem.
“We also need to keep thinking about what kind of applications we want to build. We need to continue pushing for interesting new d[ecentralized] a[pplications] to get people more interested in using Ethereum.”
Buterin's remarks come as part of broader efforts to sustain Ethereum's growth with public goods funding and token model improvements also included in the roadmap.
Buterin also touched upon broader concerns about AI governance, tying them to efforts to decentralize the network.
“If we had five AIs, each one thinking for itself and coming up with its own goals and values, maybe that would be more diverse and interesting than if all five AIs merge into one single entity and that entity becomes very powerful,” Buterin said.
He added that to ensure true decentralization, AI governance must involve human participation.
“I think the most effective way to decentralize AI is to tie it to something that’s already decentralized. The question is what in this world is already decentralized. Humans themselves are probably the closest thing the world has to that.”
Buterin went on to suggest that in his vision, AIs would be the engines and humans the steering wheels, combining AI's power with human judgment for a balanced and decentralized system.
