EigenLayer Unveils Token Distribution and Next-Level Ethereum Staking Security

Apr 30, 2024 at 02:01 am

Ethereum restaking protocol EigenLayer plans to airdrop its native token, EIGEN, to users in two phases. The stakedrop phase will allocate 15% of the total supply to stakers of Ethereum (ETH) on EigenLayer's protocol, with the first phase distributing 5% of the 15% allocation based on staking factors. The project introduces inter-subjective forking to address subjective faults in validation and improve security.

EigenLayer Unveils Token Distribution and Next-Level Ethereum Staking Security

Ethereum Restaking Protocol EigenLayer Unveils Ambitious Token Distribution Plan and Inter-Subjective Forking Security System

In a landmark announcement on April 29th, EigenLayer, the leading Ethereum restaking protocol, unveiled an extensive plan to distribute its native token, EIGEN, to users in two phases. The protocol also introduced a novel staking security system known as inter-subjective forking.

EIGEN Token Distribution Plan

The EIGEN token, with a total supply of 1.67 billion, will be distributed as follows:

  • Stakedrops (15%): Rewarding users who stake Ethereum (ETH) on EigenLayer's protocol.
  • Community Initiatives (15%): Supporting ecosystem growth and community-driven projects.
  • Ecosystem Development (15%): Fostering the development of EigenLayer-related applications and services.
  • Early Contributors (25.5%): Recognizing the contributions of individuals who supported EigenLayer's early development.
  • Investors (29.5%): Compensating investors who provided financial support to the protocol.

The stakedrops will be further divided into two seasons:

  • Season One (5% of Total Stakedrop Allocation): Distributing EIGEN based on factors such as staked amount, staking duration, and native restaking. A snapshot was taken on March 15th, and eligible users can claim 90% of their airdrop by May 10th.
  • Season Two (Remaining 10% of Total Stakedrop Allocation): Beginning a month after Season One, allowing stakers to collect the remaining EIGEN.

Inter-Subjective Forking Security System

EigenLayer is also introducing inter-subjective forking, a novel crypto-economic security concept designed to enhance Ethereum restaking by addressing subjective faults. This system will empower validators to handle restaking transactions more efficiently, ensuring a more secure and reliable network.

Additional Details

  • The EIGEN token will be non-transferable at launch to encourage community participation in governance.
  • Eligible users can stake EIGEN to secure EigenDA, a data availability solution that complements the restaking protocol.
  • Early contributors and investors will have a three-year vesting schedule, with 4% of their holdings unlocking monthly over the final two years.

Significance

EigenLayer's token distribution plan and inter-subjective forking system represent significant milestones for the protocol and the Ethereum ecosystem. The EIGEN token will incentivize participation, support community growth, and foster innovation. Inter-subjective forking will enhance security, making EigenLayer a more attractive option for ETH stakers.

As EigenLayer continues to expand its offerings, it is poised to play a pivotal role in the future of Ethereum and decentralized finance. The protocol's user-centric approach and innovative security mechanisms will continue to attract users and drive adoption in the years to come.
