The Darkness frontman Justin Hawkins shared his thoughts on Sleep Token's new song ‘Caramel’

The Darkness frontman Justin Hawkins shared his thoughts on Sleep Token’s new song ‘Caramel’ in a recent video on his YouTube channel Justin Hawkins Rides Again.
The Darkness frontman Justin Hawkins recently shared his thoughts on Sleep Token’s new song ‘Caramel’ in a recent video on his YouTube channel Justin Hawkins Rides Again.
The British band released the single on 14th July, serving as the third single from their fourth album ‘An Evening With... Sleep Token: The Pendulum.’
The song marks a slight step into pop-influenced territories for the band, known for their heavy sound.
However, ‘Caramel’ still maintains Sleep Token’s signature sonic identity, blending it seamlessly with unexpected elements like reggaeton rhythms, as noted by MetalSucks.
The publication highlights the unique juxtaposition of these genres, rendering it even more surprising given the band’s penchant for anonymity.
This strategy, while unconventional in today’s fame-driven music culture, is a conscious choice that Sleep Token employ to craft their art, according to Hawkins.
“I feel like in today’s culture it’s almost more important who’s singing it than the song itself, so to completely deny your fan base any sort of insight as to who you are or where you grew up is really bold and unusual,” Hawkins said.
“I mean aside from the fact that it’s obviously D-tuned heavily, and I didn’t really feel obliged to make any sort of musical observations on this. It’s just Sleep Token doing a really beautiful sort of evolving long-form piece of brilliance, which does transition in from something that sounds a bit like soul into really, really, really heavy metal.”
“And it does it in quite a subtle way until that moment when it really needs to smack you around the face. It does do that. It’s a great production. I really enjoyed it.”
“But I think the most important thing that’s discussion-worthy from my point of view would be like the message of the lyrics. I mean, that’s the thing that’s captured everybody’s imagination, I think, on this.”
“It’s a really lovely and nuanced piece of expressive creative writing.”
“It’s kind of like a talking about his experience. I mean, presumably, it’s autobiographical, but it is sort of trying to appeal to the perspective of somebody who wishes to remain anonymous but also wants to try and appeal to as many people as possible with this kind of expansive and ambitious rock landscape.”
“It’s really impressive and hard to categorize, as always.”
Hawkins’ commentary arrives at a significant moment in Sleep Token’s career as they continue to push musical boundaries with their latest release.
The song appears on Sleep Token’s fourth album, ‘Even In Arcadia.’ Stay Free Radio highlighted the song’s exploration of fame’s emotional toll and the gradual erosion of personal identity in the public eye.
Primordial Radio also examined the track’s lyrical depth. Their analysis found that the ‘caramel’ metaphor represents the sticky, inescapable nature of relationships under fame’s spotlight.
The release strengthens Sleep Token’s reputation for crafting complex musical narratives. Their work continues to challenge genre boundaries while maintaining their mysterious persona, a strategy that defines their artistic identity.
