Chill Guy meme coin, which once boasted a $790 million peak market cap, is now embroiled in controversy as allegations of plagiarism surface.
A popular cryptocurrency meme coin, Chill Guy (CHILLG) has been hit by plagiarism claims, with a striking similarity noted between its iconic artwork and a cover of a Vietnamese children's magazine.
Once boasting a peak market capitalization of $790 million, Chill Guy has faced scrutiny over its visual identity, which has become synonymous with the cryptocurrency.
A recent discovery has brought to light a magazine cover featuring a boy in a pose and a dog with a head that bears an uncanny resemblance to the Chill Guy meme. This has led to widespread speculation regarding whether the meme's creator, Phillip Banks, appropriated the artwork.
The claims gained significant traction on Crypto Twitter, with many users sharing the image of the magazine and discussing the potential plagiarism in ChillGuy's art.
In response to the accusations, Banks addressed them in a post on X, stating, “Vietnamese children’s magazine repurposed CGWLKDGAF.” He dismissed the critics, asserting that his work was the original source.
Coin68, a Vietnamese crypto publication, confirmed that the Vietnamese children's magazine repurposed Banks' art, with the magazine cover artist drawing inspiration from Banks' ChillGuy artwork.
In a series of tweets, it was revealed that someone used Banks' art to create the cover for an issue of a children's magazine.
A user on X, known as "Behind Blue Eyes," confirmed that he drew inspiration for the artwork from Phillip Banks' Chill Guy meme.
