Bitcoin ETFs Surge with Historic Inflows, Signaling Renewed Wall Street Interest

Mar 26, 2024 at 06:28 pm

Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) experienced a net inflow of 228.97 BTC on Monday, marking the first positive flow since March 15. The Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC) led the inflows with $262 million, followed by BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) with $35 million and Franklin Templeton's Franklin Bitcoin ETF (EZBC) with $20.5 million. Despite outflows from the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC), executives and analysts believe the success of spot ETFs indicates pent-up demand for BTC from institutions.

Bitcoin ETFs Witness Historic Inflows, Signaling Renewed Institutional Interest

After a week of steady outflows, Bitcoin spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs) experienced a surge in inflows, amassing 228.97 BTC yesterday. This positive net flow marks the first instance of such a trend since March 15.

The influx of capital into Bitcoin ETFs comes on the heels of a period of volatility for the cryptocurrency, during which the funds saw outflows of nearly $1 billion. However, with Bitcoin's recovery to $71,014.23, the ETFs have absorbed approximately $15 million.

Leading the charge in this inflow was the Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC), which saw BTC inflows worth $262 million on Monday. BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) followed suit with $35 million in new shares created, while Franklin Templeton's Franklin Bitcoin ETF (EZBC) added $20.5 million.

This recent surge in institutional demand for Bitcoin ETFs is indicative of a broader trend in the financial industry. Wall Street titans like Fidelity and BlackRock have been rapidly growing their assets under management in this sector, outpacing their more crypto-specific counterparts.

The Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC), an outlier in this group, has experienced significant outflows since its conversion to a spot ETF in January. However, analysts and industry executives maintain that the success of the new ETFs demonstrates a significant pent-up demand from institutions for BTC.

"The new demand for Bitcoin cannot be separated from the introduction of spot ETFs," said John O'Loghlen, Managing Director of Coinbase Asia-Pacific. "This reality has set in, and we must monitor how the situation evolves."

The positive inflow into Bitcoin ETFs has had a ripple effect on the publicly traded crypto exchange Coinbase, whose shares have seen a significant boost due to BTC's gains. On Monday, the company closed at $279.71, representing a 14% increase in a single day. Pre-market trading on Tuesday morning has witnessed an additional 2% surge to $285.60.

Analysts attribute this close correlation between Coinbase's stock and Bitcoin to the exchange's role as custodian for a substantial portion of the 206,000 BTC backing ETF shares. They eagerly anticipate Coinbase's Q1 2024 earnings call in May, where the impact of this custody service on the company's bottom line will be revealed.

The recent inflows into Bitcoin ETFs and the positive impact on Coinbase's stock underscore the growing institutional recognition of Bitcoin as a legitimate asset class. As the cryptocurrency market continues to mature, we can expect to see further demand for vehicles that provide exposure to this digital gold.
