Bitcoin Core Developer Peter Todd Debunks HBO's Claims That He is Satoshi Nakamoto
Oct 09, 2024 at 10:08 am
Moments after HBO aired their highly anticipated documentary “Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery” and pointed out at developer Peter Todd as a possible face behind Satoshi Nakamoto pseudonym, the fabled creator of Bitcoin, Todd took to ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) to debunk HBO’s claims.
Bitcoin Core developer Peter Todd has denied claims made by HBO's recent documentary "Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery" that he is the creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto.
In a series of tweets from his official X account, Todd stated that he is not Satoshi, responding to claims in the documentary that he was involved in developing the Bitcoin whitepaper and blockchain technology.
“I'm not Satoshi,” Todd wrote in one tweet.
The documentary also alleges that Todd was paid $500,000 to help write the Bitcoin whitepaper, a claim that Todd also refuted.
“They also claim that I was paid $500k to help write the Bitcoin whitepaper, which never happened,” he added.
The claims about Todd's involvement in Bitcoin's creation were reportedly made by Cullen Hoback, the filmmaker behind the HBO documentary.
However, according to Todd, it was likely a journalist who leaked the clip before the documentary aired at 9 pm on October 8.
“In fairness a bunch of journalists were given screeners to see it before it was published,” Todd wrote.
“So _maybe_ one of them leaked some clips. But that is a good way to lose your job…So good chance Cullen is in fact trying to drum up hype.”
The identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin, has been the subject of much speculation over the years, with several individuals being named as possible candidates.
However, none of these claims have been definitively proven.
