Bitcoin (BTC) jumped at the start of the week as investors cheered reports suggesting U.S. President Donald Trump may take a more measured approach

Bitcoin rose at the start of the week as investors assessed reports that U.S. President Donald Trump may take a more measured approach to implementing new trade tariffs on April 2.

The world’s largest cryptocurrency was last up $87,127.50, or 0.8%, to $108,107.99 by 02:12 ET (06:12 GMT).

Instead of broad, industry-level levies, Trump’s administration is expected to impose tariffs on specific countries with significant trade imbalances with the U.S., according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

The plan, which is expected to target around 15% of nations with persistent deficits—leading to the moniker of the “dirty 15,” could include major economies such as China, Japan, India, and Vietnam.

This uncertainty over the tariffs had initially weighed on risk assets, but optimism around a more measured approach helped Bitcoin realize some gains.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had earlier suggested that countries could negotiate to avoid higher tariffs by reducing their own trade barriers, showcasing the potential for flexibility in the administration’s strategy.

This development has mitigated some concerns about a potential escalation in trade tensions, ultimately leading to increased confidence in riskier assets like cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin firm Metaplanet appoints Eric Trump to strategic advisory board

Japanese Bitcoin investment firm Metaplanet Inc (TYO:3350) has named Eric Trump, son of U.S. President Donald Trump, to its newly formed Strategic Board of Advisors, the company announced on Friday.

The Tokyo-listed firm, which has been rapidly expanding its Bitcoin holdings and is known for its large-scale cryptocurrency investments, said the board aims to enhance its global presence and drive the adoption of Bitcoin.

Eric Trump, who has experience in finance and branding through his role in the Trump Organization, is expected to provide valuable insights and support to Metaplanet as it expands its operations and investment activities.

Metaplanet has positioned itself as Japan’s leading Bitcoin Treasury Company, currently holding over 3,200 BTC and boasting one of the largest cryptocurrency investment portfolios in the country. The company has ambitious plans to grow its Bitcoin reserves to 10,000 BTC by the end of 2025.
