The President of Belarus, Aleksandr Lukashenko, raised the possibility yesterday that the Eastern European country could begin mining cryptocurrencies.

President Aleksandr Lukashenko of Belarus has expressed openness to the possibility of his country engaging in cryptocurrency mining.
During a meeting with Alexei Kushnarenko, the newly appointed minister of energy, Lukashenko raised the topic of crypto mining in response to a report by Bloomberg that the U.S. government is examining the creation of a national strategic crypto reserve. This reserve could include major cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin, ether, solana, ripple, and cardano.
The report also touched upon the Biden administration's efforts to impose sanctions on Russia, which have led to a surge in demand for decentralized finance (DeFi) and cryptocurrencies in the country.
As reported by Belarusian state media outlet Belta, Lukashenko made remarks alluding to the White House's interest in crypto.
"You see the path the world is going, and especially the largest economy in the world. They announced yesterday that they will keep a crypto reserve. Therefore, there will be a demand for it. Well, maybe we should do it ourselves," Lukashenko stated.
This possibility arose when discussing the optimal allocation of the nation's energy resources.
"Look at this mining. More and more people are turning to me. If it is profitable for us, let's do it. We have an excess of electricity. Let them mine this cryptocurrency and so on," the president added.
Earlier this year, crypto exchange FTX expressed its willingness to collaborate with Belarus on mining activities. FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried visited the country in February to discuss potential partnerships.
