Atlantic Salmon 50p coin becomes UK's rarest 50p as collectors scramble to get their hands on it

The Atlantic Salmon 50p coin, minted in November 2023, has been revealed as the rarest 50p in circulation, with only 200,000 ever made.

The coin, which depicts the fish on the back of a portrait of King Charles, has now knocked the 2009 Kew Gardens 50p off the top spot for the first time.

An eBay listing for the coin reads: “This rare 50p coin from 2023 features the Atlantic Salmon and is a must-have for any serious collector.

“With only 200,000 mintages, this coin is one of the most sought-after in decades.

“This coin is a great addition to any collection. Don’t miss your chance to own this stunning piece of British currency.”

The 50p saw a major increase in value between June and December as its rarity became more well-known among coin collectors.

And the prices continue to rise as collectors are less willing to part with their historic coin.

The 50p is the most collectable coin, with over 100 different designs appearing on the reverse (tails) since its introduction.

These include special designs for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and milestone Royal Occasions, such as the King’s Coronation.

Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal Mint, said: “The releasing of mintage figures is an eagerly anticipated event among the coin collecting community – and this year is particularly exciting as we reveal the Atlantic Salmon as the rarest 50p in circulation.

“For the first time in 15 years, the highly collectable Kew Gardens 50p loses its top spot as the rarest in circulation with the Atlantic Salmon 50p splashing its way to number one.

“2023 marked pivotal changes for the nation’s coinage, including the introduction of coins celebrating King Charles III’s Coronation entering circulation.

"Finding these special designs, like the Atlantic Salmon, in your change is a win for all collectors.”

The prices increased by £69.10 from £14.50 in June to £83.60 in December, a 477 per cent increase.

It is currently listed for £150 with a £3.50 tracked delivery fee.
