A crypto trader has pocketed $6.8m after placing highly leveraged bets on Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH), just before President Donald Trump announced the U.S. Crypto Strategic Reserve.

What Happened: According to data from HyperDash, the trader deposited $5.9m in USD Coin (USDC) into Hyperliquid, a decentralized derivatives exchange, on March 1.

The trader then used those funds to open $200m in leveraged long positions with a 50x multiplier on both BTC and ETH.

Those positions were closed out quickly, with many trades closing between $87,512 and $91,399 for BTC and at prices above $2,400 for ETH. After closing out the majority of the positions, the trader appeared to have lost some money as they reopened smaller positions.

The first Bitcoin position was opened at 10:44 PM (GMT+2) on March 1, while the first Ethereum position was opened at 2:49 PM on March 2—about 35 minutes before Trump made the announcement.

Many of the positions were closed out after the announcement, which caused a surge in prices. Bitcoin rose past the $92,800 mark, while Ethereum went above $2,427.

The timing of the trader’s positions and the subsequent price movements have led some industry experts to speculate on whether the trader had insider knowledge of the announcement.

“This $200 million long on Bitcoin and Ethereum before the Bitcoin Strategic Reserve announcement could be the biggest INSIDER TRADE I’ve ever seen,” stated Carl Moon, host of The Moon Show.

The White House will host its first Crypto Summit on March 7, where Bo Hines and David Sacks, leaders of Trump’s Working Group on Digital Assets, will be talking to industry executives about regulatory policies and stablecoin oversight.

Trump’s Posts Spark Market Frenzy: On March 2, Trump made the announcement of the Crypto Strategic Reserve, aiming to solidify the U.S.’s position in digital finance.
